On the morning of June 15th, Basha High School in Chandler buzzed with excitement and joy as Mikey’s League hosted an unforgettable inclusive football clinic. Differently-abled athletes aged six and above gathered for an inspiring day of football drills alongside members of the Cardinals, NFL alumni, and the Basha High School football team. As someone deeply invested in the community and a passionate supporter of inclusivity, I had the immense pleasure of witnessing the profound impact of this event.
The atmosphere was electric as the young athletes arrived, brimming with anticipation and enthusiasm. The sight of these remarkable children, each facing their own unique challenges, coming together to participate in football drills was nothing short of inspiring. One of the key figures in making this day special was Dennis Gardeck, Cardinals Linebacker and team captain. Dennis, who has been making a huge impact in the community ever since he became a Cardinal as an undrafted free agent in 2018, led the event with immense energy and dedication. He has just created his own non-profit organization called the Fireworks Foundation, further solidifying his commitment to community support and inclusivity.
One of the highlights of the day was seeing the kids interact with Hank, my big, lovable therapy dog. Hank’s presence added an extra layer of comfort and joy, as the children eagerly petted and played with him, their faces lighting up with smiles. My son and I enjoyed every moment, cherishing the opportunity to be part of such a heartwarming event.
The drills themselves were tailored to be inclusive, allowing every participant to engage at their own pace and ability. The camaraderie and encouragement from the Cardinals players, especially Dennis Gardeck, and the Basha High School team created an environment where each child could thrive. It was more than just a football clinic; it was a celebration of ability, perseverance, and the power of community support.
As I watched the children run, throw, and catch the footballs, I was reminded of the importance of events like these. They provide differently-abled kids with the chance to experience the thrill of sports, build confidence, and make lasting memories. The joy on their faces was a testament to the impact of Mikey’s League and the dedication of everyone involved.
Reflecting on the day, I am filled with gratitude and hope. The relationship between the Arizona Cardinals, Mikey’s League, and leaders like Dennis is a testament to our commitment to inclusivity and community. I look forward to many more events like this, where we can continue to support and uplift these incredible athletes.
